Hey guys, Nick here! Its that time of year again where we all leave the State Fair with a few more pounds and take one last boat ride around Lake Minnetonka admiring the beauty that nature has to offer. As you send your children off to their first day of class at a school in the Lake Minnetonka area you might be asking yourself a plethora of questions. “What will my child learn today? Are the teachers qualified? What kind of testing will be done?” Your child’s education is important so I will shed some light on where the Lake Minnetonka schools rank among the state and even the nation!
Being in the Lake Minnetonka area there are many great schools to choose from including Wayzata, Minnetonka, Orono, and last but not least Westonka. All of these schools have been top 10 in rankings for our state and top 50 nationally for several years now. Whichever one you decide to send your child to will be a great choice! Most of my work involves the western side of Lake Minnetonka so I would like to focus on Westonka.
For the 13th consecutive year, as a district, the Westonka MCA test scores have ranked among the best in the state (Wayzata, Minnetonka, and Orono were up there too!) ranking #4 overall in math and #2 overall in reading for 2015. ACT test score were an average of 24.5 in 2014, 3.5 points higher than the national average of 21 and 1.6 points higher than the Minnesota average of 22.9! As a district Westonka ranked 2nd among Minnesota public schools and 6th overall in Minnesota. From award winning music to state competing sports teams and a 19 to 1 teacher to student ratio your child is guaranteed a wonderful school career at Westonka and will be noticed by top end colleges around the nation!

Hey guys, Nick here! Lately I have seen a few FSBO’s, also known as For Sale By Owners, pop up around the neighborhood. To some it may seem like a great idea and they say “Why pay out a portion of my home to somebody else when I can do it myself?” In reality you can do it yourself but it may be a ride that you wish you never hopped on once you get started. I’m going to shed some light on why it may be a wiser choice to choose a realtor from the start and most likely save you money in the long run!
First you have to market your home. Most realtors have a personal website and an association website for the promotion of homes and drawing in those buyers. For example The Lake Minnetonka Home Team uses, Zillow, Trulia, Northstar MLS, Re/Max, Star Tribune Magazine, The Lake Minnetonka Magazine and our own personal website. How would you plan to market your home against the homes being shown on these platforms?
As a FSBO you are a one man army against a trove of other people looking at your house as a chance to save money themselves. You are going to have to deal with buyers and their agents who will take advantage of you knowing you don’t have a professional at your side. After you have been beaten up by the buyers an inspector can come through, tear a deal down, and cause future buyers to shy away as they know an inspection fell through on your home.
The greatest challenge with being a FSBO definitely comes with the paperwork. Stacks and stacks of paperwork from title companies, real estate brokerages, lien wavers, inspectors, and mortgage companies. It can all add up quickly and things can go sour fast. I’ve heard of FSBO’s losing tens of thousands of dollars because they forgot to write a price in on the counter offer. You may think you are saving money without paying for an agent but they are looking at you as an opportunity to save money and a lot of times the winner is with the agent.
If people really want to try and sell their home without professional help I would say give it a try and see how it goes. After a few weeks of banging your head against the wall go ahead and call a realtor. We would love to take your headaches!

Some of you might say “I’m not into dressing up like a fairy tale character.” or “Dragons are for nerds.” Well, the Minnesota Renaissance Festival is much, much, more than that and I am here to shed some light on events for people of all ages and personalities!
Every weekend there is a different theme for the festival so no visit is ever the same! Take the kids to shamrocks and shenanigans for a good laugh or swoon a lady for a date during the chocolate and wine festival. If neither of those suit you just grab a stein, fill it to the brim with mead, and watch a knight get thrown off their horse during the joust! Don’t forget to chomp on a delicious turkey leg either!
If there is an extra dollar in your pocket then join in on one of the many royal events around the festival. My personal favorite is the Bawdy Beer Show! The food and beer will add some calories but the jesters will make you laugh so hard you will burn it right off! If events aren’t your cup of tea feel free to meander through the endless rows of shops, you will lose yourself in all the fun!

Hazellewood Grill and Tap Room is a great place to gather with the co workers and enjoy a glass of wine on the way home from work. Hazellewood originally started out as just a dinner hot spot but quickly transitioned to being open 7 days a week from early in the morning to late at night. They have specials running Monday through Friday for dinner and if you can make it up there on Saturday or Sunday mornings they have a wonderful brunch! Happy hour is daily from 3-6 with numerous drink specials and appetizers that will zazz up your taste buds! I highly recommend the fried pickles! With a wonderful atmosphere, great food, and an ever changing menu, it is never a bad choice to choose Hazellewood!
If the kids have you on the run and you are short on time, feel free to call Joey Nova’s Pizzeria! Located right next to Hazellewood, Joey Nova’s specializes in hand made pizzas and specialty subs. Choose to eat in or have a speedy delivery to your door but one thing is for certain you will always enjoy what you order! The chefs at Joey Novas have a variety of culinary experience that adds a personal twist to crowd favorites. You can never go wrong with pizza but my favorite is the buffalo chicken tenders with a homemade buttermilk buffalo sauce. Joey Nova’s is open 7 days a week for your convenience!

My name is Nick Landon I’m the second member of the Lake Minnetonka Home Team member! The 5th Annual Moonlight Trail Night was on February 15th, 2014 from 6-9 pm. A few of my Remax associates and I stoked up a bonfire where we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows and served up steaming hot chocolate (plus doggie treats for the ‘other members’ of ones family). People came out in droves and moved along the trail illuminated by over 1000 luminaries by walking, skiing, sledding, shoeing and even biking. It was a beautiful clear night with temperatures in the mid-teens. We were fortunate to meet many people in the community. It was a great Minnesota winter evening and we are look forward to taking part again next year!
